Final posting for 2016.

The Pavilion is quiet today, most people having left.

The final Team dinner last evening was an enjoyable affair. The main guests were Lt.Col. and Mrs. Simon  Rushen, representing CDLS, and Mrs. Marion Evans, former manager of the Pavilion. A specially engraved medals was presented to John Marshall to commemorate his first coming to Bisley 60 years ago. Patrick Champagne won the Gerry Ouellette Award and Jim Paton the Victoria Rifles Trophy as, respectively, the top Canadian Under 24 and Top Canadian overall in the Grand. With so many people leaving early this morning, the festivities did not go on very late.

So Bisley is over for another year. I would not presume to comment on the Canadian Team's performance - that will be for the Team Officers to report. I'd like to thank those who have read these daily ramblings and hope they have provided a few sparks of interest and information.

Dave Calvert, along with a large crowd of supporters, arrived at the Pavilion as night fell. As tradition dictates, he fired a shot from the cannon. Some team members 'partied' until dawn and beyond. Here are a few snaps from yesterday.

The final team dinner will be held this evening, with the majority then heading for home tomorrow.

Saturday, July 23, 2016

Preliminary Result (E & O E) of the Mackinnon, fired this morning. Teams of 12 shooters, 10 shots at 900 and 1000 yards.
It was a good close match, with the result in doubt most of the way. At 1000 yards, the wind began to pick up, still varying from side to side, which gave the coaches a bit more challenge. It was noticeable that England stopped shooting on a number of occasions, which the other teams ploughed ahead.
1. England 1169.144
2. Ireland 1160.127
3. Scotland 1159.116
4. Canada 1157.111
5. Wales 1156.119
6. Australia 1156.102
7. Guernsey 1152.113
8. Jersey 1132.101
9. Germany 1122.84

Zambia Rose Bowl
1.  BCRC
2.  Canada
3.  Australia

It remains warm and sunny.

The Final of the Queen's is just starting as I write.

Later at 1730
David Calvert, Royal Air Force Target Rifle Club and a good friend to Canadian shooters, has won the Queen's Prize for the second year in a row. He scored 297.41, one point ahead of three others on 296.38. Jim Paton scored 292. More Details later, after the Prize Giving and the visit of the winner to the Pavilion. The cannon is charged!

At the same time, the House of Lords fired against the House of Commons for the Vizianagram. The Upper House won by 453.28 to 452.35. I wonder whether such a match could be ever held at Connaught?!

Queen's Second Stage is underway this afternoon. As previously reported, there are eight team members competing: Jim Paton, Barry Langille, Peter Westlake, Patrick Champagne, Scott Murray, Steven Spinney, Geoff Woodman and Fazal Mohideen. After the Second Stage, our sole qualifier is Jim Paton with 150.24. All 149s were 'in', so there is very little between the 100 qualifiers for tomorrow's final.

The Final of the Donaldson Memorial will be fired this evening. Geoff Woodman, Jim Paton, Peter Westlake and Fazal Mohideen have qualified in the final 100. Peter Westlake finished 56th and Fazal Mohideen 63rd.

For the St. George's Final tomorrow morning, our two qualifiers are Barry Langille and Ray Smeltzer. 149.18 was required to qualify after a 13-way tie shoot.
The Kolapore is underway this morning, under partly overcast skies.

The Second Stage of the St. George's was fired yesterday evening. However, the NRA has not yet posted the scores or list of this who have qualified for Saturday's Final.

The Prince of Wales was fired on Thursday morning. Canadians in the list: 5th Jim Paton 75.13, 14th Ray Smeltzer 75.12, 34th Tom Walters 75.11; also listed Geoff Woodman and Pat Vamplew 75.11.

The Canadian Team scores in yesterday's Overseas were (sorry about the lack of formatting):

Mr JAM Paton 35.7v 35.4v 35.6v 105.17v

With the Prince of Wales, the Grand Aggregate was now completed. James Corbett from Australia with a score of 701.96 retained his two point advantage over David Calvert. Canadians in the top 200 were (E & O E): 20th Jim Paton 694.12, 77th Patrick Champagne 688.80, 101st Ray Smeltzer 686.74,  143rd Barry Langille 684.71, 148th Fazal Mohideen 683.77, 156th Geoff Woodman 683.69, 169th Peter Westlake 682.71, 174th Steven Spinney 682.64.

Many other aggregates were also completed yesterday. These can be found on the NRA web site, shown as completed on Thursday 21st July.

Thursday, July 21, 2016

The Overseas Team Match - preliminary result - Teams of 12 shooters, 7 shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards.
1. Australia 407.54 420.56 416.55 = 1243.165
2. Canada 408.46 415.46 415.45 = 1238.137
3. Jersey 409.34 413.49 417.55 = 1234.138
4. Guernsey 407.48 413.51 408.49 = 1228.150
5. Germany 402.38 412.59 413.35= 1227.132
It was a good close match, with not too much between the teams. the Australians' perfect score at 500 yards really sealed their victory.

In the A.G. Bell, over the same course as the O\verseas. the Athelings (BCRT) beat the Canadian Cadet Bisley Team by 1232.138 to 1223.132.

In an astonishing result, Wales won the National Match by one point from England and Scotland. There will be rejoicing at Bisley and in the valleys tonight.

I do not yet have the scores for the Prince of Wales, fired this morning, and the final placings in the Grand Aggregate.

As I write this, the second stage of the St. George's is underway at 600 yards.

The Queen's First Stage and the Conan Doyle were fired yesterday. Only this morning's Prince of Wales (15 at 600 yards) remains to complete the Grand.

Large numbers of concurrent Aggregates were completed as well. I will not attempt to summarise these - you can see the lists on the NRA web site for events that finished on Wednesday 20th July.

The Conan Doyle at 900 yards was the last long range in the Grand. Geoff Woodman was 33rd with 49.8 and Patrick Champagne 84th with 48.6.

Eight Team members have qualified for the Queen's Second Stage on Friday. The cut-off was 101.10, reflecting the rather fickle breezes of yesterday. Those 'in' are: Jim Paton, Barry Langille, Peter Westlake, Patrick Champagne, Scott Murray, Steven Spinney, Geoff Woodman and Fazal Mohideen.

There was some significant shuffling at the top of the Grand. James Corbett from Australia now leads with 626.87, two points ahead of three others on 624. Canadian standing are: 26th Jim Paton 619.79, 74th Patrick Champagne 614.72, 140th Fazal Mohideen 610.67, 174th Stan Frost 608.65, 181th Steven Spinney 608.59, 183 Geoff Woodman 608.58, 190th Tom Walters 607.70. As I write this on Thursday morning, the trees outside are quite still, so not much *may* change after the Prince of Wales.

As far as I can see, there are no Canadian winners of the other aggregates, but you might wish to glance at the Brigadier, Donaldson, Faunthorpe, 500 yards Aggregate, New Zealand, Short Range, Stickledown and Sudan.

This afternoon will see the first of the Team matches -the Overseas for the Canadian other visiting Teams, the A.G. Bell for the Canadian Cadet Bisley Team and the Athelings, and the National for the Home Countries. They will be followed by the Second Stage of the St. George's. Tomorrow morning is the Kolapore, followed in the afternoon by the Queen's Second Stage.

Before we know that it's really started, it's almost over!

Wednesday, July 20, 2016

The First Stage of the St. George's was fired yesterday morning. Cut-off for Stage Two was 73.8. The following from our Team have qualified: 61st Ray Smeltzer 75.8, 66th Tom Walters 75.8, 81st Stan Frost 74.13, 101st Barry Langille 74.11, 110th Patrick Champagne 74.11, 117th Steven Spinney 74.10, 155th Pat Vamplew 74.9, 229th Jeff Jenkins 73.10, 257th Cheryl Hearn 73.9. The Second stage will be fired on Thursday evening after the Overseas Team Match.

In the Grand, Mr. R. Birtwistle now has a two point lead, still having dropped only one point at 474.69. Canadian standings are (E & O E): 35th Jim Paton 467.60, 58th Patrick Champagne 465.54, 57th Ray Smeltzer 465.44, 142nd Stan Frost 461.41, 180th Barry Langille 459.52. The full list may be found on the NRA web site.

The First Stage of the Queen's is being fired today, along with the Conan Doyle - the last long range in the Grand. It is partially overcast this morning, with a blustery wind. The forecast speaks of thundershowers in the afternoon.

The Ladies "Sherry" Party takes place later this morning, before which I shall have escaped from the Pavilion!

The NRA Semi-Annual Members' meeting will be held this evening.

Tuesday, July 19, 2016

Geoff Woodman narrowly lost his tie shoot for the Lovell. Both he and Mr. Cottzee of South Africa scored 25/25, but the latter had three vees to Geoff's one.

It continued to be very warm and may be even more so today. A break may be coming tomorrow, just in time for the Queen's First Stage. Possible thunderstorms!

Although the wind yesterday was not strong, it was fickle. That, perhaps combined with the heat, caused a number of competitors, including some of our own, to be "Corped" at 1000 yards. There was quite a shake-up at the top of the Grand.

The primary Canadian scores, as far as I can find them, are:

Corporation (1000 yards): 13th Steven Spinney 50.4

Times (300 yards): 51st Patrick Champagne 50.7, 63rd Stan Frost 50.4, others in the list Scott McGinnis 50.8, Ray Smelter 50.7, Tom Walters 50.7, Geoff Woodman 50.4, Pierre Tremblay 50.4

Wimbledon (600 yards): 11th Jim Paton 50.8, 27th Ray Smeltzer 50.7.

Monday Aggregate: 18th Jim Paton 148.19, 42nd Patrick Champagne 145.13

Howcroft Newspaper Aggregate: 27th Patrick Champagne 198.27, 32nd Stan Frost 198.24

Stock Exchange: 37th Stan Frost 172.18, 43rd Patrick Champagne 171.19

Grand Aggregate to Monday: Leader, R. Birtwistle, has dropped one point at 399.51, 14th Jim Paton 395.51, 62nd Patrick Champagne 391.43, 95th Ray Smeltzer 390.41, 100th Scott Murray 390.38

The First stage of the St. George's is being fired this morning, after which most of the Canadian Team has the afternoon off..

Monday, July 18, 2016

It remains warm, and mostly sunny - not much of a breeze so far. Performance in the infamous Corporation at 1000 yards may be strongly dependent on which detail the squadding has placed a particular shooter.

Geoff Woodman's tie shoot for the Lovell (1000 yards) will be held this evening.

Last night's Canadian Reception was a jolly affair. The heat kept most people out on the Pavilion verandah, apart from frequent forays back into the bar. By 11 pm, things were restored to normal and relative peace descended..

As the week goes on, more and more aggregates are decided as well as individual matches. For full details, I refer you again to the NRA web site, and I repeat my caveat that entry into aggregates is optional, so that not all Canadian names may show.

The three matches yesterday were the Alexandra (600 yards), Daily Mail (500 yards) and the Duke of Cambridge (900 yards).

Alexandra. This was won by our old friend, and regular CFRC attendee, John Deane with 50.10. No team members showed in the prize list but the scores of Bernie Pepin and Fazal Mohideen (50.7), Ray Smeltzer (50.5) and Scott Murray (50.4) were noted.

Daily Mail. Stan Frost was 14th with 75.10.

Duke of Cambridge. Stan Frost 16th with 50.7, Scott Murray 26th 50.6. Other scores noted Geoff Woodman 50.6, Peter Westlake 50.5 and Ray Smeltzer 50.5.

And for the aggregates completed yesterday ...

Sunday Aggregate. Stan Frost 10th with 174.22.

Weekend Aggregate. 19th Jim Paton 344.46, 24th Geoff Woodman 344.41, 38th Stan Frost 339.35.

Clementi Smith. 21st Jim Paton 174.27.

The Grand Aggregate now has 250 points on score. Scores are high. The leader is Jacqui Rankin with 249.39, with 8 other 249s. Canadians on the Leader Board are: 26th Jim Paton 247.33, 38th Stan Frost 247.28. Also on the list are 63rd 246.30, Patrick Champagne, and 66th Geoff Woodman 246.29. Today's score will count another 150 points towards the Grand.

Sunday, July 17, 2016

It's Sunday morning, partly overcast, mild, with a light wind. Preparations are underway in the Pavilion for tonight's Canadian Teams' Reception.

There were three matches yesterday, including one, the Daily Telegraph, with which the Grand Aggregate commenced.

The big news is that Geoff Woodman is tied for first place in the Lovell (1000 yards) with 50.6. I'll report on the tie-shoot in due course. Also in the 'list' is Tom Walters 45th with 48.3.

In the Donegall (300 yards), Jim Paton and Pat Vamplew had identical 50.8s in 36th place.

And in the Telegraph (500 yards) Jim Paton is 12th with 75.13, and Patrick Champagne 19th with 75.12.

Two more aggregates were completed yesterday. I should note that entry into aggregates is optional so some people may have good totals but not show in the lists. In all lists, I may have missed names if the team members have not identified themselves as Canada.

Saturday Aggregate: 15th Jim Paton 172.26, 28th Geoff Woodman 172.19
Tucker Aggregate: 10th Jim Paton 246.50, 12th Geoff Woodman 245.35

Saturday, July 16, 2016

Yesterday saw the start of the NRA individual competitions with the Admiral Hutton at 900 yards and the Century at 500 and 600 yards. The last details of the latter were fired quite late in the evening.

Prize lists may be accessed on the NRA web site, go to  nra.org.uk and then Competitions and Results, Imperial Meeting 2016. Not all Canadian team members have identified themselves as Canada, as had been requested, so you may need to search for DCRA and perhaps some other allegiances as well as by name ti find out how our people have done.

Admiral Hutton: Stefan Isaacs 50.7 (6th), Jim Paton 50.4 (26), John Chapman 50.2 (29).

Century; Bernie Pepin 100.13 (14th), Fazal Mohideen 99.11 (29).

Friday Aggregate: Jim Paton 149.17 (8th).

Today, the Grand Aggregate will commence with the Daily Telegraph at 500 yards, along with two other non-aggregate matches, the Donegall at 300 and the Lovell at 1000 yards.

The combined NRA-British Commonwealth RC overseas team reception is this evening at the BCRC Clubhouse.

The annual match against the Barbarians RC was fired yesterday afternoon. I do have the Canadian scores, but not yet, I regret to say, the corresponding details of the Barbarians. The word is that they won the match by a 'significant' margin.

In the evening, the team BBQ was held - a convivial function with a good crowd of friends and guests.

The NRA individual matches get underway today, with the Century and the Admiral Hutton. I will post scores and results as quickly as possible. The NRA web site is sometimes a little slow to divulge such secrets!

Thursday, July 14, 2016

The Team photo was taken this morning by Tim Webster. The 'gap' is for Stefan Isaacs who will be pasted in later.

I have incomplete scores from the RAF International yesterday. No other team scores have reached me, but I am told that Canada was 5th out of 7 teams in the match. Canadian scores were:
Roger Mullin - 144.19
Stefan Isaacs - 135.5
Patrick Champagne - 150.22 (*)
Jeff Jenkins - 147.11
Bernie Pepin - 148.17
Emma McGinnins - 136.10
Peter Redstone - 140.11
Cheryl Hearn - 148.13
Team Total - 1148.108

The traditional match against the Barbarians is underway this afternoon at 900 and 1000 yards.

This evening will see the Team BBQ for members and friends. This is the precursor to the NRA individual matches which get underway tomorrow.

Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Wednesday morning, hardly a cloud in the sky! The RAF International Match is underway at Pirbright.
The past two days have seen the return of the parties from Wales and the North on Monday, and a series of intermittent. but often very heavy, thundershowers on both days. Not many of our team were shooting until Tuesday evening, but some of the Schools and Match Rifle events were interrupted, as was the nearby Farnborough Air Show. There was quite a bit of local flooding as stream overflowed.
In the late afternoon on Tuesday, we had a team firing in the British Commonwealth RC International Match. Overcast at the start, but by the last 600 yard range the sun was out, shining brightly from behind the targets and making the sight picture very difficult. Team members have been gathering here all week. There are still a few others slated to arrive over the weekend or early next week.

The Macdonald Stewart Pavilion looks very good indeed. Theresa Barbato and her staff are doing a great job in caring for our beautiful old home - they take tremendous pride in this and it really shows!

The first match, against the North London RC and other visiting teams, is being fired on Stickledown this afternoon. There will be a formal dinner at the NLRC this evening, after which I hope to report the results to you.

The calendar for the next few days is roughly as follows:
9 - 10 July, team of 4 shooters competes in Yorkshire at Brockholes, vs Huddersfield RC, and Deer Hill Ranges, vs Manchester RC and others.
9 - 10 July, team of 8 shooters competes at Rogiet Moor, vs Wales - this is the first match at Rogiet Moor in several years.
11 July, all return to Bisley.
12 July, team(s?) compete at Bisley vs British Commonwealth RC and others.
13 July, team(?s) compete in the RAF International, with the CanAir Trophy at stake. Location yet to be determined.
14 July, team match vs Barbarians RC at Bisley.
14 July, Team BBQ at the Pavilion.
15 July, NRA Individual Matches start.

I will report as often and as promptly as possible.

Jim Thompson

Addendum, 22:50 Friday.

Just back from the NLRC and a very enjoyable and sociable dinner. Lots of good friends of Canada.
